Whether you've spent the day wandering the whitewashed streets of Mykonos town, or are taxi-ing in for the evening, make sure you get there for the sunset. Not just one night, every night. I'm a sucker for a sunset in any country, but on the Greek islands especially, the event becomes something of a ritual. People gather by the sea, at bars, and as the sun dips lower, conversations halt and eyes stare dreamily out to the skyline.
When the flash of fuchsia light finally gets below the glittery waterline there's all all-round sigh of wistful satisfaction and discussions are resumed, cocktails picked up again, bags hitched back up onto shoulders, and the evening gets underway.
Sound kinda Disney? It's better. Drop everything to be part of it.
There are a number of spots that really tick the sunset-viewing boxes. Head to the port and Little Venice. Caprice is a favourite, situated right on the seafront with tables so close to the edge that one too many and you'd be a teeter away from an impromptu frolic in the surf. The cocktails are huge and deliciously icy. Make sure you order a Stawberry Daiquiri - the strawberries are fresh and naturally honey sweet. They set the rum off to perfection. After a balmy walk along the cobbled streets you'll be more than ready for a liquor-laced cool-down like this one. Oh and the glasses are huge, you'll be going on that for a while.
Scarpa is another firm fave. This time it was the Pina Colada that rocked my world - thick, creamy, sweet and tropical, it's all you could ask for, with a great hunk of fresh pineapple to boot. What's not to love?! Out of season you can pop up 10 minutes or so before the sun's set to do it's thing and you'll be fine for a last minute seat. In the middle of the busy period though, make sure you get there early and get the apperatifs on the go, they're popular Little Venice locations, and you'll have to scheme to get your spot. Oh but gosh 'n darn it it's worth it!
Afterwards chatter away until dusk turns to dark, then make your way food-wards. You'll find everyone eats later in Mykonos so book your tables for 9ish, stay tuned for more Mykonos musings, some great eatery recs will come out to play.
