Ceramides sound like the enemy in a bad sci-fi film but in reality they’re our skin’s best friend. In a nutshell they help skin hold on to moisture, strengthen its barrier against outside aggressors, and firm and plump to boot. All in all that’s one hot little ingredient that’s hell bent on rejuvenating our complexion. See? Skin’s. Best. Friend.
They’re fat! - that is, they are lipids that sit in the top layers of our skin. They actually make up more than half of our skin naturally, so supplementing them is never going to be a bad thing. And needless to say they’re pretty intrinsic when it comes to how our skin looks, and feels.
They’re the glue that holds our skin together – they’re the binding factor between our skin cells. A lack of ceramides can result in dry skin, uneven skin and wrinkled skin. Imagine a crumbled down wall, that’s a wall that needs more cement between the bricks right? We want a nice perfectly upright and even wall that stays that way for as long as possible, so we need to hold on to our ceramide cement.
They fade with age and sun – ceramide levels in our skin lower both over the years and as a result of sun damage, so reducing the latter can help our cause – grab that SPF! But beauty products containing ceramides can help us out.
They’re for sale – you CAN purchase your ceramides. Beauty brands are wise to the benefits of replenishing your ceramide levels and so there are numerous ways to massage them in, from serums, to moisturisers, to essences. What you MUST be aware of though is that they’re not the most stable of ingredients, i.e. With too much exposure to oxygen, they can quickly become defunct, so if you’re buying them in a serum, the best ones will be in little capsules or a dropper, if you’re buying them in a moisturiser, the best ones will be in a tube or pump bottle over a jar.
